Everyone here says on Long Island, not in it, and that's about right. It's a hundred-odd miles of island with two counties, thirteen towns, two cities, ninety-some incorporated villages, and a few hundred hamlets that each have their own name, their own fire district, and their own opinion about which deli is best.
It's also a good place to lease a car. The island has more commuter rail than anywhere else in the state, which means a lot of households drive less than they assume and can take a smaller mileage allowance than they'd guess. Knowing where the local details sit is the rest of it, and that part is our job.

This is the decision worth ten minutes, because a lower tier means a lower payment for the whole term, and for a lot of Long Islanders the honest answer is lower than instinct suggests.
If you take the train, start low. A car whose job is the round trip to a station — Ronkonkoma, Hicksville, Babylon, Huntington, Mineola, Port Washington, Stony Brook — plus a supermarket run and a weekend, often lives comfortably inside a smaller allowance. Park-and-ride commuters routinely buy 12,000 miles and turn the car in having driven far less. Add up one honest week before you decide; it's the easiest saving on the whole transaction.
If you drive, count generously. There's no short way across the island. East–west means the Long Island Expressway (I-495), the Northern State, Route 25 as Jericho Turnpike or Middle Country Road, Route 25A along the North Shore, or Route 27 as Sunrise Highway and then Montauk Highway. North–south means Route 110 through Huntington and Melville, Route 135, Nicolls Road, or William Floyd Parkway. A commute that crosses the Nassau–Suffolk line daily belongs in a higher tier.
A few things that quietly add miles: a summer place or a standing weekend out east on the North or South Fork; kids in travel sports, which on this island means driving to another county on a Saturday; and the ferry lots, since a car kept at Bay Shore, Sayville or Patchogue for Fire Island runs seasonal and lumpy rather than steady.
| Allowance | Typically suits |
|---|---|
| 7,500 mi/yr | Rail commuters, a second household car, mostly local driving |
| 10,000 mi/yr | Short local commute within one town, occasional longer trips |
| 12,000 mi/yr | Daily driving between towns, Suffolk-to-Nassau commuting |
| 15,000 mi/yr | Long car commutes, regular East End trips, off-island driving |
Tell us a realistic week and we'll price two tiers side by side so you can see what the difference costs per month. Between two, take the higher one — buying miles at signing is cheaper than buying them at the end.
A $0 Down lease means no down payment is applied toward the vehicle. First month's payment, the lender's acquisition fee, DMV and registration fees, and applicable New York State sales tax are still collected at signing.
There's a real argument for structuring it this way beyond keeping cash in your pocket. A down payment on a lease isn't equity you can recover — if the vehicle is stolen or written off early in the term, the settlement goes to the leasing company as titleholder and the lease ends. Gap coverage protects the lender's position, not your cash. Putting nothing toward the vehicle removes that exposure entirely.
The trade-off is a higher monthly payment, since the full depreciation spreads across the term. Both structures are legitimate. We'll walk through the difference and you pick.
People assume the county line is just a line. On a lease it isn't, and it stopped being one fairly recently.
Suffolk County raised its local sales and use tax rate effective March 1, 2025, after voters approved Proposition 2 the previous November to fund the county's Water Quality Restoration Act. Suffolk's combined rate is now 8.75%. Nassau's is 8.625%. An eighth of a percent apart, where they used to be identical.
Two things make that matter more than the number suggests. First, New York doesn't tax a lease month by month — it collects sales tax at inception on the total of all payments for the entire term, so the difference applies to the whole thing at once. On a lease totaling $20,000 in payments across the term, the gap between the two rates is roughly $25.
Second, and more useful to know: the rate is set by where the vehicle is regularly garaged, not where it's sourced. Your driveway decides it. A Huntington resident pays Suffolk's rate on a car that came from a Nassau store, and a Garden City resident pays Nassau's rate on one sourced out east. Nobody saves anything by shopping across the county line. (Rates get adjusted periodically, so we'll confirm the current one when we quote you.)
Insurance is the variable that moves more, and it moves by ZIP rather than by county. The western Nassau ZIPs closest to the Queens line, central Suffolk, and the barrier island communities all price differently from each other, so it's worth a fresh quote from your carrier before you settle on a payment.
One to raise early if you're leasing a pickup, because it's easy to sort out in advance and awkward to sort out afterward.
Vehicles registered with commercial plates aren't permitted on New York State parkways, and on Long Island the parkway network carries a lot of the traffic: the Northern State, the Southern State, the Meadowbrook, the Wantagh, the Sagtikos, Sunken Meadow, the Seaford–Oyster Bay, Ocean Parkway and the Robert Moses Causeway. That's also how you reach Jones Beach, Robert Moses and most of the North Shore.
Registration class depends on the vehicle's configuration and how it's used. Mention it while we're structuring the lease and it's a non-issue; we'll walk through the options for that specific truck and you can confirm the class with the New York State DMV.
While we're on trucks and vans: the Southern State's low overpasses are local legend, so if you're considering a high-roof van or planning a roof box, check the loaded height.
Most of the paperwork is ours. New York registration and titling are part of the transaction, and if you're transferring plates from a vehicle already registered in New York, tell us up front and we'll set it up correctly.
A few things key to the specific vehicle and are easiest handled in the same week the car arrives:
Worth knowing if you head to New England: the Port Jefferson–Bridgeport and Orient Point–New London ferries both take cars and skip the bridges entirely.
Honest answer: usually not, but it depends where you are on the island.
Long Island's weather is less about accumulation than nor'easters and coastal ice, and the plowing response varies between a village that clears its own streets and a hamlet waiting on the county. If you're on a hill on the North Shore, on a side street that gets plowed late, or you need to be at work regardless, all-wheel drive earns its keep.
If you're on flat ground and can wait out a storm, a good set of tires does more for you than a drivetrain — front-wheel drive on proper winter tires will out-perform all-wheel drive on all-seasons. Worth pricing both ways, since the residual difference between drivetrains sometimes makes the AWD version cost less per month than people expect.
Both counties, and the villages and hamlets inside them. Nassau — Garden City, Hempstead, Mineola, Westbury, Freeport, Rockville Centre, Levittown, Massapequa, Hicksville, Great Neck, Long Beach, Valley Stream, Oceanside, Manhasset. Suffolk — Huntington, Northport, Commack, Hauppauge, Smithtown, Ronkonkoma, Islip, Bay Shore, Babylon, Sayville, Patchogue, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, and out east to Riverhead and the forks. Pick your county or town from the list at the foot of this page, or just tell us where you're keeping the car.
Usually a lower tier than you'd assume, which is good news for the payment. If the car's main job is the run to a station on the Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Port Jefferson, Huntington or Port Washington branch, plus errands and weekends, 7,500 or 10,000 often covers it with room to spare. Track one normal week, multiply it out, add a buffer for off-island trips, and tell us the number — we'll price the tiers around it.
Marginally cheaper in Nassau, and the gap is newer than most people realize. Suffolk's combined rate went to 8.75% on March 1, 2025, funding the county's Water Quality Restoration Act; Nassau's is 8.625%. New York collects lease sales tax up front on the total of payments for the term, so that eighth of a percent applies to the whole term at once — around $25 on a lease totaling $20,000 in payments. The rate follows where you garage the car rather than where it was sourced, so a Suffolk address pays Suffolk's rate no matter which dealer the vehicle came from. Insurance is the larger variable and it moves by ZIP, not by county.
Depends how it's registered, and it's easy to settle in advance. Commercial plates aren't permitted on New York State parkways, which on Long Island covers the Northern State, the Southern State, the Meadowbrook, the Wantagh, the Sagtikos, Sunken Meadow, Ocean Parkway and the Robert Moses Causeway. Registration class turns on the vehicle's configuration and use, so raise it while we're structuring the lease and confirm with the New York State DMV.
Yes. In New York a leased vehicle is registered in the lessee's name — you're the registrant, the leasing company holds the title. Your registration shows your name and address, which is what town clerks ask for alongside proof of residency. Requirements differ between Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Islip, Brookhaven, Huntington and the rest, so check with your town, but the lease itself isn't the obstacle people expect.
Add the new plate at delivery and remove the old one. Nothing on Long Island is tolled, but the bridges and tunnels into the city are cashless, and toll notices route through the registered owner of record where lenders typically add an administrative fee per notice. It takes a couple of minutes and saves the most common avoidable charge we see.
It stays paid. New York collects the tax at lease inception on the total of all payments, and the Department of Taxation and Finance has held that a lessee who relocates and registers the vehicle in another state isn't entitled to a refund. It doesn't change whether leasing makes sense, but if a move is on the cards it's worth factoring into which term you choose — and worth mentioning to us so we can price a couple of options.
Yes, including the North Fork, the Hamptons and Montauk. Summer traffic east of the canal on Route 27 and County Road 39 is what it is, so scheduling matters more out there in July and August than it does in February. Tell us where you'll be and we'll work around it.
Eventually, yes. New York requires annual safety and emissions inspection, with new vehicles exempt for an initial period after the original registration, and your registration will show when it's due. It's your responsibility as the registrant rather than the leasing company's.
Yes, as part of the transaction. If you're transferring plates from a vehicle already registered in New York, mention it up front so it's set up correctly, and remember to move that plate across on your E-ZPass account too.
Return it, buy it out at the purchase option price in your contract, or lease something else. If the vehicle is worth more than the buyout figure, that difference may be worth acting on rather than handing back. Start looking a few months before maturity, since the options are wider while there's term remaining.
Long Island splits into Nassau — the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay, plus the cities of Glen Cove and Long Beach — and Suffolk's ten towns, running from Huntington and Babylon out to Southold, Shelter Island, Southampton and East Hampton. Pick your county or your town:
